Indian government is finally set to launch the latest version of its own operating system dubbed as the Bharat Operating System Solutions, also known as BOSS. BOSS will replace Microsoft Windows and all other OSs in future.

This software package has been described as “India’s own PC operating system” and “the most meaningful product to come out of the Indian software industry in decades — and a work that a government department has done”.

What is BOSS and where did it come from?

Originally developed in 2007 by National Resource Centre for Free/Open Source Software, is now being developed along with Gujarat Technical University, DRDO and a few private computer geeks being involved.

BOSS GNU/Linux is an “LSB certified” Linux distribution: the software has been certified by the Linux Foundation for compliance with the Linux Standard Base standard. BOSS GNU/Linux is derived from Debian GNU/Linux.

It comes with powerful security features and will be able to protect from countless attacks by hackers. The new OS comes with a virtual keyboard on the display screen itself and a bulk file converter which ensures a safe and speedy transfer of data. BOSS was able to withstand the activities by Army Intelligence who tried to break it but in vein. It comes with almost all the features of Microsoft Windows and at the same time is completely secured and easy to use.

The Indian operating system will be supporting 18 languages including regional languages such as Kannada, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati and Malayalam to name a few.

Why do we need BOSS?

India, emerging as one of the fastest growing economies, has to face frequent hacking attempts by Chinese hackers and Indian group of hackers. Also, the reports leaked by Edward Snowden had brought to light the vulnerabilities of most countries’ cyberspace. It also showed that India was the most scrutinized nation by the US intelligence agencies. However, a successful implementation may safeguard our cyberspace from unethical hacking attacks in the future.

BOSS is free and open source you can download it from the official website www.bosslinux.in for free.
